The Benefits of Massage Therapy: Study Finds Health Enhanced

The American Massage Therapy Association is reporting that a recent study is confirming that there is a link between massage therapy and improved health, a conclusion that many have long suspected may assist in achieving a healthy and balanced lifestyle.

The findings particularly come as a source of comfort to those dealing with ailments such as back pain, breast cancer and stress.

"A study conducted by Beth Israel-Deaconess Center for Alternative Medicine Research and Education and the Center for Health Studies in Seattle concluded that therapeutic massage was an effective treatment for providing long-lasting benefits for patients suffering from chronic low back pain. In fact, researchers hypothesize that massage might be an effective alternative to conventional medical care for persistent low back pain."

Breast cancer survivors have also found the treatments helpful. Prior to undergoing a lumpectomy, mastectomy or breast reconstruction, massage relaxes muscle tissue and increases the flow of lymph. After the operation, lymph drainage massage therapy treatments are found to be helpful, as they help to disperse of excess lymphatic fluids. Additionally, massage therapy is said to have been of great assistance to many survivors in helping them to regain their self esteem and reconnect with their bodies. In light of the research, physicians are aware of the benefits of massage therapy, and a reported fifty- four percent are encouraging their patients to take part in the procedure. Many of these patients in the Houston area are seeking out services at the 1960 West Chiropractic Center. In addition to massage therapy, the center offers are range of services including: chiropractic care, x-ray services and on-site active rehabilitation.

The primary doctor at the clinic, Karen S. Thomson, knows first hand how helpful the therapy can be. "Suffering from scoliosis since childhood, I was definitely a success story, which continues to this day through monthly treatment," she says. The doctor continues, "My mission is to provide each of my patients with professional diagnostic assessment and therapy protocols in order to begin their journey to a more pain-free life."
